Age is only one clue. Look at what failed, past repairs, comfort, remaining life, and the full replacement cost together.

Ask what actually failed
Before comparing equipment, ask which component failed, what caused the failure, what the repair restores, which risks remain, and what warranty applies to the work. A repair estimate and a replacement proposal answer different questions; neither should be used to hide the other.
- Is this the first material repair or part of a pattern?
- Are safe, compatible parts and refrigerant service reasonably available?
- Does the repair address the cause or only the symptom?
- Are comfort, humidity, air quality, noise, or energy problems present even when the system works?
- Would another planned home project change the best answer?

Age is a clue—not the answer
ENERGY STAR lists older equipment, frequent repairs, rising bills, comfort problems, humidity, dust, and noise as signals that replacement or broader system improvements may deserve consideration. None of those signals alone proves that a specific replacement quote is right.
A newer system with a small, isolated failure may be an easy repair. An older system with recurring failures, poor comfort, and a major component problem may justify comparing a full project now.

Compare the whole project
A useful replacement comparison includes equipment configuration, load assumptions, ducts or distribution, electrical work, controls, permits, disposal, commissioning, warranties, incentives, payment timing, financing, and exclusions. Compare that complete result with the expected life and risk of the repair—not the equipment sticker alone.
